The Zambian Small Scale Farmers Network (ZSSFAN) has described President-elect Hakainde Hichilema’s victory in the August 13 general election as a clear testimony of the people’s trust in his leadership.

ZSSFAN Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Edward Nsama says the President-elect’s re-election also demonstrates his commitment to democratic values and dedication to the country’s economic transformation agenda.

In a congratulatory message issued to the media in Lusaka today, Mr Nsama said the Network is encouraged by the government’s continued focus on agriculture as a key driver of job creation and food security, particularly in rural areas.

Mr Nsama has since appealed to the government to expand access to affordable farming inputs through the Farmer Input Support Programme (FISP).

“The Network warmly congratulates His Excellency Mr Hakainde Hichilema on his successful re-election as Head of State,” Mr Nsama said.

He further appealed to the government to transform Zambia Postal Services Corporation (ZAMPOST) infrastructure into a farmers’ bank to improve access to rural financial services and payment systems.

The Network CEO also expressed gratitude for the government’s efforts to strengthen agricultural markets and build climate resilience among small-scale farmers.

He said the Network pledged its full support to the new dawn administration in efforts to take the agriculture sector to greater heights.

Mr Nsama reaffirmed ZSSFAN’s commitment to working with the government, noting that agriculture has the potential to address unemployment and other economic challenges facing the country.

The Zambian Small Scale Farmers Network comprises more than six  million small-scale farmers drawn from all the country’s 10 provinces.
