Chinese President Xi Jinping has congratulated President -elect Hakainde Hichilema on his re-election as President of Zambia and pledged to work with him to elevate bilateral relations to new heights.

In a congratulatory message, President Xi said the two leaders have met twice in recent years and jointly steered the development of China-Zambia relations.

Mr Xi said the political mutual trust between the two countries has continued to deepen, practical cooperation has been fruitful and China and Zambia have closely coordinated and cooperated in multilateral affairs.

He noted that he attaches great importance to the development of China-Zambia ties and stands ready to work with President Hichilema to implement the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).

President Xi further pledged to join the Zambian leader in carrying forward the traditional friendship between the two countries and cementing mutual support.

He expressed commitment to continuously raising the level of mutually beneficial cooperation in order to take the China-Zambia comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership to new heights and deliver greater benefits to the peoples of both countries.

Zambia and China established diplomatic relations in 1964 and have maintained strong cooperation in areas of infrastructure, mining, trade, health, and education. The two countries upgraded their relations to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership in 2023.
