Women, youths and persons with disabilities in Shangombo District have been equipped with knowledge and tools on human rights mentorship and advocacy.

The training is being implemented under the Participatory Power Project by the Action Governance Forum, with financial support from the European Union (EU).

Speaking in an interview with the media, Action Governance Forum Executive Director, Justine Mushoke, said the training is meant to equip communities with the right information on human rights, governance and advocacy.

“This training is important because it will equip the community with the skills and necessary knowledge on issues to do with human rights,” Mr Mushoke said.

He explained that the project is designed to amplify the voices of marginalized groups in communities, particularly women, youths and persons with disabilities.

Mr Mushoke said the project will help create a culture of consultation between institutions and community members on issues of governance and human rights, adding that the trained individuals will be empowered to hold duty bearers accountable.

Meanwhile, Shangombo Town Council Secretary, Abwino Banda, said the training re-echoes the Government’s policy of empowering communities with knowledge on governance matters to enable them become self-sufficient.

“The meeting supports Government’s policy of empowering communities with knowledge on governance matters in order for them to make meaningful contributions to their communities,” Mr Banda said.

Mr Banda said the knowledge acquired will help the participants identify challenges in their respective communities and assist in the selection of Constituency Development Fund (CDF) projects.

He however, expressed displeasure at the negative attitude of some community members towards developmental meetings.

“I would like to urge all participants present to actively participate in engagement meetings, the attitude towards meetings is bad,” he said.

And Human Rights Commission District Focal Point Person, Mubita Simangolwa, said the meeting is critical in fostering development in communities.

He said he has learnt the importance of holding duty bearers accountable and transparent in the execution of service delivery.

“As a Human Rights District Focal Person, I am honoured to be part of this training. The knowledge gained will help us promote and protect human rights in the district,” he said.

And Robert Kamuya, a youth participant, has appreciated the Action Governance Forum for incorporating the youths of Shangombo in the project, saying it will broaden their perspective on human rights and help them identify and claim their rights.
