Former Minister of Labour and Social Security Fackson Shamenda says he expects a change of government in Zambia next month, urging citizens to disregard what he describes as propaganda being circulated by individuals and platforms aligned with the United Party for National Development.

Speaking in an interview, Shamenda dismissed reports suggesting that National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity presidential candidate Brian Mundubile would lose the August 13 general election, describing them as false and deliberately calculated to mislead Zambians.

He said claims attributed to UPND media personalities, bloggers and affiliated platforms had misrepresented his position and created the false impression that he had changed his view on the likely outcome of the election.

“My position remains exactly as stated in The Mast of 21 July 2026, where I made it clear that I foresee the opposition forming the next government,” Shamenda said.

“That position has not changed, and I stand by it.”

Shamenda said it was regrettable that some individuals and media platforms had chosen to distort his statements for political purposes, maintaining that his position on the August election remained unchanged.

He said he was considering taking appropriate action against those responsible for publishing and circulating what he described as defamatory statements and false attributions concerning his political views.

“I am currently considering taking appropriate action against those responsible for publishing and circulating these defamatory statements and false attributions regarding my political views,” he said.

Shamenda urged members of the public to disregard reports that did not accurately reflect his position and instead rely on statements issued by him directly or published through sources carrying his actual remarks.

He also rejected reports attributed to him suggesting that Mundubile should withdraw from the presidential race ahead of the August 13 general election, describing the claim as unfounded and a complete fabrication.

Shamenda did not identify the specific individuals or platforms he believes were responsible for misrepresenting his remarks, nor did he indicate what form the action he is considering might take.

The former labour minister has previously criticised the ruling party and maintains that the opposition is positioned to form the next government after the August polls.

Neither the UPND nor NRPUP had issued an official response to Shamenda’s remarks by the time of publication.

August date fast approaching with Shamenda maintaining that his prediction of a change of government remains unchanged and rejecting claims that he has called on Mundubile to withdraw from the presidential race.
