Zambia : Govt Committed To Scaling Up Nutrition

Muchinga Province Deputy Permanent Secretary (DPS) Brian Sichande says the Government remains committed to providing  good nutrition among children and communities.

Mr Sichande said nutrition is key to effective service delivery stressing that a poorly nourished population cannot effectively perform its daily activities or contribute to national development.

He made these remarks when a team from the Ministry of Health and National Food and Nutrition Commission (NFNC) paid a courtesy call on him at his office in Chinsali district.

Mr Sichande said initiatives such as the Scaling Up Nutrition has been of great help in promoting good nutrition, hence evaluation of the Scaling Up Nutrition is imperative to identify gaps and maximize service delivery.

He added that there is a serious need for stakeholders to work together to ensure that nutrition programmes such as the Scaling Up Nutrition are effectively implemented.

He further said it was the desire of President Hakainde Hichilema and the government to ensure that the country has a well-nourished population as this would contribute to improved service delivery and national development.

Mr Sichande said the assessment of the Scaling Up Nutrition programme would help stakeholders determine how effective the programme had been, identify gaps and build on interventions that had yielded positive results.

Meanwhile, NFNC representative Jungwa Nambeye said the team of enumerators and consultants from UNICEF  are in Muchinga Province to assess the effectiveness of the Scaling Up Nutrition programme.

Ms Nambeye said the programme, which is being supported by UNICEF, is being implemented across some districts including Chinsali and Isoka.

She said the programme includes nutrition support groups of peer mothers who support each other on nutrition matters.

Ms Nambeye said the programme is targeting children aged zero to 2 years, caregivers and pregnant women.

“The purpose of the assessment is to see how effective the Scaling Up Nutrition programme was, how well it was implemented, the challenges encountered and what UNICEF and the nation at large can learn,so that future programmes can be implemented better,” she said.

Ms Nambeye said data would be collected through focus group discussions, community members and community based volunteers.

She said Key Informant Interviews will be conducted among health workers and lead community-based volunteers to assess the effectiveness of the nutrition support groups.

Ms Nambeye said that in Chinsali, the assessment would focus on one health facility in one ward.

She said the information gathered would be compiled into a report and shared with the provincial administration to help guide future nutrition intervention.
