Zambia : 400 Artisanal Miners Converge In Kabwe For Training

Over 400 miners from across the country have gathered in Kabwe for artisanal small scale mining training aimed at promoting safe mining and shaping the country’s mining sector.

And Small-scale miners have commended the government for reviving the small scale mining sector and placing high premium on the promotion of safe mining.

Speaking on behalf of miners at the ongoing 20-day training programme for artisanal miners, Jonathan Kankomba said the government deserves to be commended for revamping the sector.

 Mr Kankomba said the mining sector has so far recorded tremendous improvement in the last five years because of the good government policies.

“As small scale miners, we are happy with the efforts the government is making in the promotion of safe mining in the country through organising training programmes such as this one in safe mining for artisanal miners and other initiatives. This is the way to go,” he said.

Mr Kankomba said small scale miners are indebted to the government for recognising them as key players in the mining sector.

He said the artisanal small scale mining training programme, which has been organised by the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development, is a clear demonstration of the importance the government attaches to the sector.

He said small-scale miners will use the knowledge from the training programme to improve their operations and effectively contribute to the country’s economic development.

“We will formalise our businesses in accordance with the guidance we are receiving from the government,” Mr Kankomba said.

The 20-day training has been organised to equip artisanal miners with knowledge on how to engage in safe mining.
