Zambia : MUZ Condemns Continued Loss Of Lives In Mining Accidents

The Mineworkers Union of Zambia (MUZ) has condemned the continued loss of lives in the mining accidents.

MUZ is saddened by the continued loss of miners’ lives in mining following the death of 52-year-old miner Mambwe Nicolas in an underground accident at Tongguan Mining Company in Chambishi and four people in an illegal mining accident in Milenge District.

MUZ President Joseph Chewe said in a press statement availed to ZANIS that his Union is deeply saddened and conveys its deepest condolences to the families, colleagues and communities affected by these tragedies.

Mr Chewe said the sustained fatalities recorded in the mining sector this year are a painful reminder that much more needs to be done to protect the lives of people who work in and around mines.

“As a union, we are calling for stronger safety regulations, rigorous enforcement and more frequent inspections across the mining sector. Safety standards must not only exist on paper. Mining companies and operators must be held accountable, while workers must be provided with safe working environments, appropriate protective equipment, adequate training and effective emergency response systems,” said Mr Chewe.

He said MUZ was particularly concerned about the risks faced by workers in underground operations, where rock falls, ventilation failures and other hazards can have fatal consequences.

Mr Chewe called for a thorough investigation into the Tongguan incident, with the findings used to identify safety gaps and ensure that appropriate corrective measures are taken to prevent similar incidents.

The MUZ President pointed out that the deaths in Milenge further highlight the dangers associated with unsafe and unregulated mining activities.

“MUZ supports efforts to formalise artisanal and small-scale mining and urges authorities to strengthen monitoring, education and enforcement to ensure that miners do not resort to hazardous operations that put their lives at risk,” he said.

Mr Chewe emphasised that mining must never become a choice between earning a livelihood and losing one’s life.

He urged Government, regulators, employers and all stakeholders to treat occupational safety as an absolute priority, stressing that Zambia cannot continue to mourn miners who could have been protected through stronger regulations, strict enforcement and a zero-tolerance approach to unsafe mining practices.
