Zambia : REA Completes Luwingu's K19.4 Million Grid Extension

The Rural Electrification Authority (REA) has completed the implementation of the over 19.4 million Kwacha Tungati Grid Extension Project in Luwingu District in Northern Province.

Rural Electrification Authority Chief Executive Officer Alex Mbumba says the project is aimed at increasing the number of households connected to the national grid.

Engineer Mbumba says the project which was awarded to a Turkish based contractor Laatu Energy Solutions Limited is expected to benefit about 636 beneficiaries who will be connected to the supply of electricity which has been constructed in the area.

The Chief Executive Officer was speaking when he paid a courtesy call on Luwingu District Commissioner Chomba Chileshe in Luwingu.

He added that the project has given electricity supply to Tungati Combined School, Local Court, Market, Tungati Min Hospital, Kuta Primary School, Chibofwe Primary School, Sokontwe Primary School and Surrounding areas.

He explained that the supply of electricity to the area is expected to enhance the existing economical activities currently taking place on a micro scale such as retail trading, alcoholic beverage trading and maize-milling in the community.

Engineer Mbumba stated that the completion of the Tungati Grid Extension Project will encourage entrepreneurs in the area to set up businesses which communities had challenges accessing.

He emphasized that the implementation of the Tungati project will bring social and economic benefits which will improve the livelihood of the people of Tungati Chiefdom.

The Chief Executive Officer also highlighted that over 41 beneficiaries are expected to get connected under ASCENT subsidy program which is currently in force

And Luwingu District Commissioner Chomba Chileshe Commended government for completing the project on time saying people can now start benefiting from it.

Mr Chileshe indicated that since independence people of Tungati Chiefdom used to cover long distances to acquire services which need electricity.

He also disclosed that health facilities in the area used to have problems keeping vaccines and other essential drugs which needed refrigeration and that with the completion of the project these services will no longer be challenging to them.

Mr Chileshe further indicated that even vulnerable people in communities are now able to have their houses connected to electricity because of the subsidy programme which has been introduced.

He urged communities where REA has installed the electricity infrastructure not to vandalize the infrastructure aimed at improving their livelihood.
