Zambia : Mutapa Appointed U20 Coach As FAZ Eyes AFCON

The Football Association of Zambia (FAZ) has appointed Chipolopolo legend and Green Eagles coach Perry Mutapa as Head Coach of the Under-20 Men’s National Team.

Mutapa takes over from Boyd Mulwanda whose last assignment was the 2025 Under-20 AFCON tournament in Egypt.

Until recently, Mutapa was an assistant coach with the Senior Men’s National Team that participated at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

FAZ General Secretary Charles Chakatazya said the new technical bench will be tasked with preparing for next month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualification tournament in Mauritius.

“In an effort to regenerate the focus for our Under-20 boys’ national team, we have decided to appoint a new bench to align with the assignments coming ahead. We have our focus on the forthcoming Africa Cup of Nations zonal qualifier which will take place in Mauritius from 18-27 September,” Chakatazya said.

Chakatazya said FAZ has tasked the bench to qualify the team to the AFCON and subsequently to the FIFA World Cup.

“Our Under-20 project has been on the wane since the 2017 side that won the AFCON and reached the quarterfinals of the FIFA World Cup in South Korea,” he said.

He added that FAZ is drawing from the coaching expertise of former internationals to inspire the current generation.

“The team assembled is bringing four former Chipolopolo stars whose experience we expect to spur the young lads to victory,” Chakatazya said.

Mutapa will be assisted by Sipho Mumbi as 1st Assistant, Lameck Banda as 2nd Assistant, and Masautso Tembo as Strikers Coach.

Former Chipolopolo defender Emmanuel Mbola and 2012 AFCON winner James Chamanga have been named Equipment Manager and Team Ambassador respectively.
