The deceased, identified as Stephen Banda of Tasala 5 Compound in Chief Kalindawalo’s area, died while receiving treatment at Petauke District Hospital.
The incident occurred around 02:00 hours on September 30, 2026, in Riverside Compound.
Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba said 48-year-old Paul Zulu, the reporter in the matter, was asleep with his family when his wife, 38-year-old Mary Phiri, heard a loud noise coming from inside the house.
Mr Mweemba said Ms. Phiri woke up to investigate and found the kitchen door open, where she allegedly saw four unidentified people standing near the doorway.
She raised an alarm, attracting neighbours who managed to apprehend one of the suspects, identified as Mr Banda.
Mr Mweemba said Mr Banda was allegedly beaten by the mob before neighbourhood officers intervened and took him to Petauke Police Station.
He said Mr Banda was issued with a police medical report form and later taken to Petauke District Hospital, where he died while receiving treatment.
The body has since been deposited in the mortuary awaiting a postmortem examination as investigations into the matter continue.
