Ministry of Green Economy and Environment Permanent Secretary, Douty Chibamba said the vehicles will enhance monitoring, reporting, data collection and verification of emission reductions across the 15 districts covered by the programme.
Dr Chibamba noted that reliable transport is critical to the success of the programme, particularly in reaching communities in remote areas where sustainable forest management, climate-smart agriculture and energy-efficient cooking initiatives are being implemented.
He said the Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme is targeting the generation of approximately 20 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent by 2030 through interventions aimed at reducing deforestation and forest degradation while promoting sustainable land management.
Dr Chibamba said the five vehicles were procured through the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) at a cost of about 321,000 United States dollars, equivalent to approximately
6.1 million kwacha.
He said one of the vehicles will be allocated to the Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA), while the others will support implementation of the programme in Eastern Province.
World Bank Group Agriculture Economist Michael Kabwe said the Bank remains committed to supporting Zambia’s efforts to strengthen forest management and promote climate-smart agriculture.
Mr Kabwe said the bank is pleased to support the Ministry of Green Economy and Environment in implementing activities under the Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Project in Eastern Province.
Zambia Environmental Management Agency (ZEMA) Director for Human Resource and Administration, Sipho Sinkala, said the vehicles will provide critical logistical support to technical teams conducting field activities under the jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme.
