Ministry of Education Assistant Director, Alvin Masendeke, says engaging learners in agricultural activities is in line with the Government’s vision of equipping young people with practical skills.
Speaking when he led a team from the Ministry in monitoring the Presidential Irrigation initiative at the school, Mr Masendeke said the initiative will enhance self-reliance and contribute to national food production.
He said schools should take advantage of agricultural programmes by giving learners opportunities to gain hands-on experience and apply knowledge acquired in the classroom.
“This initiative is for learners, and everyone, they need to take advantage of it and acquire the skills being taught, these skills are important as they will help them in future,” he said.
Mr Masendeke said the agricultural activities will also help schools contribute to their own food requirements and strengthen the school feeding programmes.
He said the initiative had the potential to promote a culture of productivity among learners by exposing them to agriculture as a possible source of livelihood.
“Learners should understand that agriculture is not only about learning in the classroom. It is also about acquiring practical skills that can be applied at home and in communities,” he said.
And St Theresa Secondary school Acting Deputy Headteacher, Moses Chilekwa has thanked Government for selecting the school to be part of the initiative.
Mr Chilekwa disclosed that the work is currently between 75 and 80 percent complete at the school.
Meanwhile, a pupil from St.Therese Girls Secondary School has observed that agriculture is important for the country’s development.
Natasha Chanda said agriculture also gives learners an opportunity to acquire skills that can be useful to them in the future.
