Luangwa District Health Director, Ikasaya Ikasaya, has thanked the government for the allocation of  K153, 000 from the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to purchase a new mortuary condensing unit at Luangwa District Hospital.

Dr Ikasaya says the current nine body capacity mortuary condensing unit has been malfunctioning for some time despite undergoing many repairs.

Speaking during a meeting at Luangwa District Hospital, the District Health Director, explained that the situation has affected the entire mortuary unit that cannot preserve bodies for a long time.

“The maximum duration the hospital can keep bodies in the mortuary is three days and this has negatively affected the communities around”, he explained.

Dr Ikasaya explained that the process of purchasing a new mortuary condensing unit is at procurement stage.

He said the procurement of the new mortuary condensing unit will ease the preservation of the bodies for longer periods allowing the families ample time to mourn their loved ones.

Meanwhile, Luangwa District Commissioner, Luke Chikani, said the government’s mandate is to ensure that services are brought closer to the people hence its commitment to purchase a new mortuary condensing unit for the district hospital.

Mr Chikani also appreciated the construction of the female and children’s wards at the district hospital which is at 95 percent completion, citing its importance in the provision of quality services to the patients.

“Previously, female adults and children used to share the same ward and this used to deny patient’s their legit privacy but we are happy that this will no longer be the case”, he explained.

The District Commissioner expressed gratitude for the massive development that has taken place in the district.
