Zambia : Kitwe Medical Experts Conduct 175 Eye Surgeries -Kasama

Medical experts from the Kitwe Teaching Eye Hospital have successfully performed 175 eye surgeries in Kasama following a 5-day integrated surgical outreach programme.

Kitwe Teaching Eye Hospital Retina Specialist Elvis Numwa disclosed that a total of 800 eye patients were screened during the exercise.

 Dr Numwa explained that the outreach targeted individuals with poor eyesight, cataracts and growths.

He added that the team also screened 600 patients for Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) ailments and managed to conduct 25 operations and 50 ear wax removal procedures.

Dr Numwa explained that the outreach programme in Kasama district received overwhelming response from the community with people travelling from across Northern Province.

“We do not just conduct eye surgery on anyone but our team carefully scrutinises all patients to determine whether an operation is necessary or not,” Dr Numwa said

He further called for stronger collaboration in sensitising communities on myths surrounding eye surgeries.

Meanwhile, patients who underwent eye surgery, have commended the Ministry of Health and its partners for facilitating the outreach programme.

Julius Mazimba, who travelled from Senga Hill district, narrated that he struggled with poor sight for eleven months.

Mr Mazimba said he is grateful to have had his sight restored after the successful surgery.

And Irene Nakamba, a resident of Mbala district, explained how her family discouraged her from undergoing surgery on the pretext that she would go blind.
