Construction of the Kasomeno-Mwenda toll road in Mwense district, Luapula Province has reached over 50 percent completion stage.

The project being constructed using the Public Private Partnerships (PPP) model to the tune of USD 260 million with GED Africa as a concessionaire is set for completion in the third quarter of 2027.

During a Media Tour of the project in Mwense, Road Development Agency (RDA) Chief Communications and Corporate Affairs Manager, Anthony Mulowa noted that the project will provide a strategic road corridor for both Zambia and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and facilitate regional trade.

Mr Mulowa explained that the project involves the construction of a 182-kilometre road between Kasomeno in DRC and Mwenda in Zambia, a 362-metre bridge spanning the Luapula River, Toll plazas and a One-Stop Border Post (OSBP).

” We want to commend the concessionaire who has made significant progress on the construction of the bridge, which is currently 60 percent complete with construction works on the One Stop Border Post also progressing, with works ongoing on both the border facilities and the associated access roads,” Mr Mulowa said.

Mr Mulowa stated that the project being implemented under a concession agreement between the Government of Zambia, through the Road Development Agency and GED Africa-Zambia Limited and the DRC is also expected to be an anchor for economic growth of Luapula Province.

” We want to urge locals to take advantage of the economic opportunities coming with this facilities and position themselves to benefit,” Mr Mulowa said.

Meanwhile, GED Africa Zambia Country Manager, Engineer Kanyuka Mumba said works on the construction of the 92-Kilometre Road has advanced with laying of asphalt expected to commence in a week’s time.

And Mumba indicated that 30 percent works and supply of construction materials have been awarded to local Zambian contractors in line with government’s Local Content Policy during the construction period of the project.

A minimum of 700 and maximum of over 1500 trucks are expected to pass through the border post pay day once completed.
