GOVT YET TO RECEIVE LEGAL BILLS OVER EDGAR LUNGU BURIAL CASE

The Zambian government says it has not yet received any legal bills, more than three months after the 23rd June 2026 judgement by the South African Supreme Court of Appeal over the burial of sixth President Edgar Lungu.

Attorney General Mulilo Kabesha has told Phoenix News in an interview that there is no need to speculate about legal fees as government has not yet received any bills.

Mr. Kabesha says although the bills are yet to be made available, government will deal with the legal costs when they are presented.

On 23rd June 2026, Supreme Court of Appeal Judge Raylene Keetley, in a majority judgement, overturned an 8th August 2025 order by the Gauteng High Court directing the repatriation of the remains of Mr. Lungu, with costs, including that of the two Lawyers hired by the Lungu family for the proceedings.

This was after the court found that the Zambian government failed to establish a legal basis for according Mr. Lungu a state funeral and to repatriate his remains.
