Rural News 1 min.Read Govt. distributes 500 assistive devices in Solwezi By Kevin Kabwe October 2, 2026 FacebookTwitterPinterestWhatsAppActing Solwezi District Commissioner, Anthony Fulwe has flagged off the distribution of over 500 assistive devices to persons with disabilities with a call on stakeholders to support government’s efforts aimed at ensuring inclusion of persons with disabilities in the development process.
Mr Fulwe says inclusion should be about ensuring that persons with disabilities have a voice in decisions that affect them and ensure they access public services without unnecessary barriers.
He said promoting dignity, inclusion and participation of persons with disabilities in various programmes therefore requires the collective efforts of all stakeholders such as traditional leaders, local authorities, communities, organisations of persons with disabilities and cooperating partners.
“We must continue moving from exclusion to inclusion, from dependence to independence and from barriers to opportunities. I therefore encourage all stakeholders to continue working together and ensure that persons with disabilities are fully included in the development process,” he said.
Mr Fulwe called on officers from the Zambia Agency for Persons with Disabilities (ZAPD) to ensure transparent, fair and timely distribution of assistive devices with priority being given to beneficiaries in rural communities
“I urge beneficiaries and their families to take good care of devices provided as these items have been purchased using public resources and their proper use and maintenance will help ensure that they provide meaningful and lasting benefits,” he said.
Speaking at the same event, Crispin Saimbunji, a Councillor under the Mixed Member Proportional Representation thanked government for demonstrating its commitment to building a more inclusive society in which persons with disabilities have opportunities to participate in national governance and development through the introduction of a mixed member proportional representation electoral system.
Mr Saimbunji said this is significant because persons with disabilities should not only be receivers of services but part of the initiating process.
Speaking on behalf of other beneficiaries, Daniel Pwele from Holland Disabled Association, thanked government for the assistive devices which will help address the mobility challenges that a lot of persons with disabilities have been facing.
The assistive devices comprise 60 wheelchairs, 15 scooters, 130 elbow clutches, 52 walking sticks, 172 walking canes and 150 sunglasses which will be distributed to persons with disabilities in Northwestern province.
