Dr Canicius Banda, a medical doctor, public health specialist and Patriotic Front (PF) chairperson for health, has died.

Dr Banda was one of Zambia’s best-known medical professionals in public life, having combined a distinguished career in medicine with active participation in politics. He previously served as vice-president for politics in the United Party for National Development (UPND) before later joining the Patriotic Front, where he rose to become the party’s chairperson for health.

Throughout his public life, Dr Banda remained a prominent voice on health policy and national affairs. Drawing on his medical expertise, he frequently commented on the state of Zambia’s healthcare system, calling for improved service delivery, greater transparency in public health administration and stronger accountability in the management of national resources.

He also earned a reputation for demanding independent investigations into matters of significant public interest. Following the death of former Kabwe Central Member of Parliament Tutwa Ngulube, Dr Banda joined calls for a forensic examination and a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the legislator’s death.

More recently, after the death of Zambia’s sixth Republican President Edgar Lungu, Dr Banda publicly called for a comprehensive forensic investigation, saying an independent inquiry was necessary to establish the facts and reassure the nation.

Even in the days leading up to his death, Dr Banda remained actively engaged in national discourse. He continued to comment on governance and political developments, maintaining his long-held position that the rule of law should prevail in addressing issues affecting national peace, security and democratic governance.

His passing marks the loss of a respected medical practitioner and seasoned politician whose career spanned medicine, public service and national politics.
