A family of four in Chisamba District has been left homeless after their house was gutted by fire in a suspected case of arson.

The family is now spending nights in an open shelter after household property valued at approximately K46, 200 was destroyed in the fire.

Misheck Kapiya, 52, of Chisumpa Village in Chief Chamuka’s area, told ZANIS in Chisamba that the incident happened on September 7, 2026, around 21:00 hours.

Mr Kapiya said he saw flames coming from the thatched roof of his two-bedroom house as he approached his home.

“I saw flames where I was talking to my friends and somehow rushed home where I confirmed it was indeed my house on fire,” he said.

He said that by the time he reached the house, his wife, Idah Kapiya, was trying to rescue their two young grandchildren from the fire.

Mr Kapiya said all family members managed to escape unharmed, but their household belongings were completely destroyed.

Mrs Kapiya said she noticed flames coming from a corner of the bedroom shortly before she was about to fall asleep.

She said she immediately got out of the house with the children.

“When I saw the fire coming from the corner of the bedroom, I walked out with my grandsons, Felix Tembo, aged three, and Max Tembo, aged one year and some months, and some belongings,” she said.

Mrs Kapiya further alleged that while attempting to put out the fire, she saw Edward Mwansa running away from the direction of the house, whom she suspects of starting the fire.

The family said the property destroyed included 15 by 50-kilogramme bags of maize, kitchen utensils, a bag of sunflower seed, school uniforms, books, shoes, clothes, a bed and beddings.

The family has since appealed to Government, through the Disaster Risk Management Division for financial and material assistance.

Meanwhile, the suspected arsonist is in police custody and is appearing before court.
