Chilanga District Education Board Secretary, Lenny Longwe, has disclosed that over K800, 000 has been disbursed for the implementation of the Presidential Irrigation Initiative Project (PIIP) in five selected schools in the area.

Dr Longwe confirmed the development in an interview with the media, saying the funds have already been disbursed to the five schools.

She said the project is expected to increase food production because school gardens can provide vegetables and legumes that diversify meals and improve their nutritional value thereby contributing to the school feeding programme.

Dr Longwe observed that irrigation allows production beyond the rainy season, helping schools maintain a more consistent supply of food and improve nutrition for learners.

“The project is aimed at transforming schools into agricultural hubs in order to help learners acquire practical agricultural skills,” she said.

Dr Longwe noted that school farming through the irrigation initiative teaches learners how agricultural production can become a source of income and employment.

She added that the programme can also stimulate learners’ interest in agriculture-related careers.

Dr Longwe named the beneficiary schools as Mwembeshi Boarding School, Zambia National Service (ZNS) Sopelo Primary School, Chinyanja Primary School, Lusaka West Day Secondary School and Kacheta Primary School.
