Charity Centre for Children and Youth Development (CCCYD) has sponsored 22 young women from vulnerable households through college education giving them an opportunity to pursue their studies.

The beneficiaries who are pursuing teaching at Solwezi Teachers’ college said financial difficulties continue to force many girls particularly in rural areas to abandon their education.

Sante Kanga’mba, a third year student, called on government institutions and other stakeholders to increase support towards girls’ education and help address early marriages in communities.

“We are told that this year’s intake is the last to be supported by the organisation and I feel bad because there are many girls out there who want to be educated but they have challenges and therefore I am appealing to government and other institutions to partner with the organisation so that the programme continues,” she said.

Natasha Ngulube another beneficiary said that the sponsorship has given the girls an opportunity to pursue their educational ambitions despite the financial difficulties faced by their families.

“Many girls in rural areas fail to complete their studies because of financial challenges and I thank CCCYD for paying for my education and I promise to give back to the community by mentoring young girls,” she said

Another beneficiary, Florence Mwansa who studied Agricultural Engineering has since secured employment with the CCCYD.

“I had five acceptance letters from different institutions but my parents couldn’t afford to pay for me, thankfully I heard of CCCYD and applied for sponsorship, I completed my agricultural engineering course and now work for the same organisation,” she said.

Organisation’s Chief Executive Officer Alex Bwaluka said the initiative was guided by a vision of creating a society in which girls are educated and independent.

“Our vision is to ensure that we have a society of girls who are educated and independent,” he said.

Mr Bwaluka also thanked the government for programmes aimed at supporting the education of the girl child, while calling for more partnerships to enable the organisation to reach additional vulnerable girls.

He stressed that the organisation believes collaboration with government, private institutions, civil society and other stakeholders can help expand educational opportunities for girls from disadvantaged backgrounds.

So far the organisation has sponsored 62 young women through college since 2022.
