Eastern Province Jurisdictional Sustainable Landscape Programme (EP-JSLP) Chama District Project Officer, Enerst Mupemo has urged boarding schools and hospitals to adopt energy efficient cooking methods, while embracing alternative energy sources.

Mr Mupemo says the promotion of improved cook stoves in boarding schools and hospitals will reduce deforestation resulting from the cutting down of trees for firewood.

He encouraged the institutions to identify and propose practical alternatives and measures they are willing to adopt in reducing their dependence on wood fuel and contribute to reducing deforestation.

“The ultimate goal is to secure concrete commitments from each institution towards adopting sustainable energy solutions and reducing unsustainable wood fuel consumption,” he stated.

Mr Mupemo said the rate at which the forest is getting depleted is more than the rate of regeneration.

“Communities need to strengthen forest protection and regeneration measures,” Mr Mupemo said.
