Voting is underway in Kalabo district, as long queues characterise today’s general elections.

At the Council Chamber polling stations in Lwanginga ward of Kalabo Central constituency, Presiding Officers Mataa Yusiku and Zaza Muhau opened the polling stations at exactly 06:00 hours.

A combined total of over 100 voters were on the queue to freely vote in this election.

The Council Chamber has two polling stations with a combined total of 1,566 registered voters comprising 784 males and 782 females.

One of the voters, Annie Muyunda Munalula, told ZANIS that she has exercised her constitutional right by voting for a candidate of her choice.

Several seats in Kalabo district are contested except for Liuwa constituency where Situmbeko Musokotwane retained the national assembly seat after being unopposed on the United Party for National Development (UPND) ticket.

Six UPND councillor candidates in Kalabo district have also been unopposed while two wards in Liuwa constituency namely Siluwe and Upangoma, have not been contested.

Kalabo district has three constituencies, 132 polling stations and a total number of 54,779 registered voters comprising 22,469 males and 32,310 females.
