A team of Paediatric surgeons from the University Teaching Hospital(UTH) has successfully performed 30 operations during a four-day surgical camp at Kasama General Hospital.

 UTH Paediatric Surgeon Amon Ngongola, who is leading the team, disclosed that seven of the procedures were major surgeries involving children with complex medical conditions.

Dr Ngongola said the team performed several anoplasty procedures on babies born without a normal anal opening, reconstructing the affected area to enable them to pass stool normally.

He expressed gratitude with the positive response from the community in Northern Province and beyond.

“We had patients coming all the way from Mpulungu and Nakonde Districts,” Dr Ngogola said.

He commended the medical team at Kasama General Hospital for its work ethic and efficiency.

And Kasama General Hospital, General Surgeon Bright Nseluka, said the surgical camp has significantly helped reduce the health facility’s referral costs.

Dr Nseluka added that the hospital has also benefited from the knowledge and skills transfer from the team of specialists.

Meanwhile, parents whose children underwent successful surgeries have hailed the exercise describing it as life-saving.

One of the parents, Cecilia Kasonde, whose child was born without a normal anal opening, expressed happiness that her child’s situation was normalised.
