The Nitrogen Chemicals of Zambia (NCZ) has set a target of producing 50,000 metric tonnes of compound D fertiliser and 5,000 metric tonnes of blended fertiliser in 2026, as the firm moves to meet national demand ahead of the rainy season.

NCZ Chief Executive Officer, Chanda Mongo, says the company has so far produced about 20,000 metric tonnes of compound D fertiliser, with part of the stock stored at the central warehouse and part of it distributed across various depots in the country.

In an interview with ZANIS, Mr Mongo revealed that NCZ has already started distributing the inputs for the next agricultural season through its 48 outlets spread across all 10 provinces.

He said the company also has about 7,000 metric tonnes of Urea fertiliser in stock.

Mr Mongo said NCZ’s primary focus remained on supporting the agriculture sector, adding that the company is currently manufacturing and blending D-Compound basal dressing fertilizer.

“NCZ’s production is directly tied to national food security. By manufacturing high-quality fertiliser locally, NCZ is ensuring that Zambian farmers receive this essential input on time and at competitive prices,” he said.

Mr Mongo said local production would help reduce the country’s reliance on imported fertiliser, protect farmers from global price shocks and support the Government’s agenda of making agriculture a major driver of economic growth.

He said continuous improvement remains part of NCZ’s corporate governance and operational strategy.

“We are currently evaluating the possibility of revamping the ammonium nitrate plant so that we can start producing top-dressing fertiliser,” said Mr Mongo.

He added that, apart from compound D fertiliser and specific blends, NCZ is also producing soil-specific fertiliser blends designed to respond to the varying needs of farmers and soils across the country.

He reaffirmed NCZ’s commitment to supporting farmers and ensuring that quality fertiliser was available on time for the coming planting season.

Meanwhile, Kafue District Commissioner, Maurice Hikapulwe said NCZ continues to play an important role in supporting agriculture and the local economy.

Mr Hikapulwe noted NCZ’s operations in Kafue are significant to the district, particularly through its contribution to the agriculture sector and the livelihoods of local communities.
