The Zambia Police Service has launched investigations into two separate fatal attacks in Kaputa and Mazabuka districts, as political tensions intensify ahead of the August 13 general elections.
In Kaputa District, Northern Province, a 36-year-old supporter of the ruling United Party for National Development [UPND], Humphrey Lwisha, was fatally stabbed during a confrontation on Monday evening.
According to police, the altercation occurred at Pump House Village after a group of UPND supporters travelling from Kaputa Boma encountered supporters of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity [NRPUP] at a drinking establishment.
Lwisha sustained a stab wound to the head and was pronounced dead on arrival at Kaputa District Hospital.
Police have arrested 10 suspects in connection with the killing and have initiated a manhunt for additional individuals suspected of involvement.
Reinforcements have been deployed to Kaputa to restore and maintain public order.
In a separate incident in Mazabuka District, Southern Province, police are investigating the death of Mr. Stanley Sakala, 31, who served as a driver to Confucius Mweene, an independent aspiring Member of Parliament for Magoye East Constituency.
Sakala was found deceased in the early hours of Tuesday at a campaign camp in Chivuna with a deep laceration to the neck. Police said a disturbance was reported from his quarters prior to the discovery of the body. The remains have been conveyed to Mazabuka General Hospital Mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Zambia Police Service Spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi confirmed that investigations into both homicides are active and pledged that perpetrators will be brought to account.
The Service has condemned the acts of violence and called on citizens to exercise restraint and cooperate with law enforcement as the country prepares for the polls.
