STRICTLY SPEAKING IT’S 11 OUT 19 MPs FOR UPND IN NORTHERN PROVINCE
Northern Province actually tells a remarkable story about how far the UPND advanced in the 2026 elections compared with 2021.
Out of the Province’s 19 parliamentary constituencies, UPND officially won 8 seats. However, the political reality on the ground goes further than the party labels appearing against the results.
Two of the successful Independent MPs had sought adoption under the UPND and, after being left out during the adoption process, went ahead as Independents and were elected largely by the same UPND membership and structures that had supported them.
In addition, the successful NRPUP candidate in Kasama North Constituency had also applied to contest on the UPND ticket and had already undertaken considerable groundwork before he was not adopted and subsequently moved to NRPUP in the last minute.
Therefore, while the official UPND parliamentary tally in Northern Province is eight, the effective political footprint is 11 out of 19 constituencies, nearly 58 per cent of the Province.
That is an extraordinary transformation from 2021 and an important indication of just how deeply UPND has penetrated all the corners of Zambia as the only truly national character political alliance.
