Government says effective utilisation of technology can significantly improve the efficiency, accuracy, coordination and credibility of election observation processes.

Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Permanent Secretary, Etambuyu Gundersen says the country recognises the vital role that credible elections play in fostering national unity, public confidence in democratic institutions, sustainable development and regional stability.

Ms Gundersen was speaking today during the official opening of a five-day training of electoral stakeholders on the use of ICT-based methodologies for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Electoral Observation Mission (SEOM), in Lusaka.

The Permanent Secretary noted that the consistent commitment of member states to invite SEOM is a clear demonstration of shared resolve to uphold transparent, credible, inclusive and peaceful electoral processes throughout the region.

Speaking at the same event, SADC Elections and Good Governance Officer Magabolle Mafiri explained that the training is targeted at individuals who form part of the pool of election observers to be deployed for election observation missions within the SADC region.
