PUBLIC STATEMENT ON THE DETENTION AND MEDICAL CONDITION OF HON. FAITH MUNTHALI

The Citizens First (CF) Party is deeply concerned about the deteriorating health condition of Hon. Faith Munthali, who was arrested and charged yesterday in Mafinga District and subsequently detained at the police station in Isoka.

According to information received by the Party, Hon. Munthali became seriously ill during the night and requested medical attention but was initially unable to access hospital care. Her condition reportedly became critical this morning, after which she was eventually taken to hospital and treated for dangerously high blood pressure.

After being returned to the police cells, Hon. Munthali reportedly collapsed and had to be rushed back to the hospital. We understand that she is currently receiving oxygen and remains under medical care.

This situation is particularly concerning given Hon. Munthali’s reported medical history, including a serious heart condition, recurrent bronchial attacks, and a recent major operation.

We understand that both the family and the Party have already applied for police bond and provided the necessary sureties. However, the application has not yet been granted.

Citizens First respectfully but urgently appeals to the Zambia Police Service and all relevant authorities to place Hon. Munthali’s health and wellbeing at the centre of their consideration. In light of her current medical condition, we urge the authorities to seriously reconsider her continued detention and to take all necessary steps to ensure that she receives appropriate medical care.

We fully recognise the importance of the rule of law and due process. However, the enforcement of the law should always be balanced with compassion, humanity, and respect for life. No legal process should unnecessarily place a person’s health or life at serious risk, particularly where there are legitimate medical concerns.

We therefore appeal to the authorities to act with urgency, compassion, and responsibility. We also ask that Hon. Munthali’s family be kept informed of her condition and that her right to receive appropriate medical attention be fully respected.

At this difficult time, our thoughts are with Hon. Munthali, her family, and all those concerned about her wellbeing.

Hon. Faith Munthali’s life matters. Her health matters. Her dignity matters.
