MNANGAGWA MOURNS CHIVAYO, REVEALS BUSINESSMAN’S FINAL NATIONAL PLANS
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has expressed deep shock and grief over the death of businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, who were killed in a helicopter crash in rural Marondera.
In a condolence message, Mnangagwa said the deaths of the couple, two crew members and a security aide had left him and the nation in deep shock and grief.
The President described the Chivayo family as philanthropic, saying its charitable work had touched many lives across Zimbabwe through acts of generosity running into millions of dollars.
He said Chivayo’s engagements extended across politics, religion, public service, culture, sport and various professions, adding that the businessman had a broad vision for his family, Zimbabwe, the Southern African region and Africa.
Mnangagwa also revealed that he was personally aware of several plans Chivayo had for Zimbabwe, particularly initiatives aimed at assisting disadvantaged people and war veterans.
“He shared with me some of these grand plans only this last Tuesday after our Cabinet meeting, just a day before his tragic end,” Mnangagwa said.
The President said Chivayo and his wife were travelling back from Gandami in rural Chikomba, where they were putting up modern family and community structures.
He said the projects were aligned with Government’s broader rural development objectives, including investment, industrialisation, development and transformation.
“His vision thus dovetailed with, and located itself within our broad national goals,” Mnangagwa said.
The President extended his condolences to the Chivayo family and the families of all those who died in the crash.
“May their dear souls be rested eternally,” he said.
