The petition hearing where former Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Sylvia Masebo, is challenging the election of Annita Kamanga as Chongwe East Member of Parliament has commenced.

Ms Masebo, who stood on the United Party for National Development (UPND) ticket contends in her petition Ms Kamanga’s pre-election campaigns were characterised by conduct that contravened the Electoral Process Act and its Code of Conduct.

Robert Simeza is the lead lawyer for Ms Masebo in the petition case where 20 witnesses have been lined up by the petitioner to testify in court.

Four witnesses have so far testified that they were attacked by suspected supporters of the respondent, who in this case is Ms Kamanga.

One witness testified that he sustained body injuries as a result of the attack and that a medical report was issued at the hospital.

Both, the petitioner Ms Masebo and the respondent, Ms Kamanga, who stoon as an Independent parliamentary candidate, were at Lusaka High Court to follow proceedings.

Ms Masebo polled 6,798 votes against Annita Kamanga’s 16,058 votes in the August 13, 2026 general elections.

Some UPND supporters gathered at the Lusaka High Court grounds to show solidarity to the petitioner.
