The Malawi Government has announced the appointment of former Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Samuel Batson Tembenu, as Head of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) Election Observation Mission to Zambia.

According to a statement released on 31 July 2026, President Arthur Peter Mutharika made the appointment in his role as Chairperson of the SADC Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation.

Tembenu will lead a team of observers from 16 SADC member states to monitor Zambia’s General Elections scheduled for August 13, 2026.

Zambian voters are expected to elect the President, Members of Parliament, local councillors, council chairpersons and mayors.

The Malawi Government also wished the people of Zambia peaceful and successful elections.
