Voting has started in Mafinga district with voters queuing up to cast their votes as early as 05:30 hours.

A check at three polling stations at Muyombe Primary which opened at exactly 06:00 hours in Kalanga Ward, found women, men and the elderly ready to cast their votes.

At Muyombe Primary Station 03 and 02 which have a total registered number of registered voters of 791 each, by 06:27 hours, 15 voters had already cast their votes, while at Primary School 01 with 792 registered voters, 20 had cast their votes by 06:40 hours.

Blackwell Kaira, a 79-year-old, has commended the Electoral Commission of Zambia staff for their professional conduct during the voting process.

Mr Kaira said voting is a democratic right, which is why he came to cast his vote.

And Betty Muwowo is among many other women who have so far come to exercise their rights by casting their ballots.

Speaking in an interview, Ms Muwowo said her reason for voting is to usher in credible leaders that will bring more development to the area.

Meanwhile, another voter, David Mfune, who voted at Musanta Primary polling station, which has a total of 652 registered voters in Vumbo Ward, described the voting process as peaceful and smooth.

He said he is happy with the manner the ECZ polling staff are handling the process so far.

“I came to vote so that peace and unity continues through the leaders I will choose

as Zambia is known for peace, he said.

Mr Mfune said peace and meaningful development can only be attained when people vote for the right leaders.

And a check at Temwani Primary polling station with 487 registered voters over 30 voters had already cast their votes by 07:55 hours despite the low turnout of voters who are trickling in one by one.

So far, at almost all polling stations visited the situation is calm with no challenges as voting continues.
