LUMEZI SOUTH PETITION: NGOMA SEEKS VOTE RECOUNT OR NULLIFICATION OF ELECTION

Losing United Party for National Development (UPND) candidate for Lumezi South, Lufeyo Ngoma, has asked the Chipata High Court to order a recount of votes or nullify the election in which Oliver Mwale of the National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) was declared the winner.

Mr. Ngoma is challenging the election result announced after the August 13, 2026 general election, alleging that the election was marred by vote buying, intimidation, violence, discrepancies and alteration of figures, including alleged electoral malpractice.

In his testimony, Mr. Ngoma alleged that about a week before polling, he received information from polling agents that people were allegedly being given money and other items at a farm associated with Archbishop Alick Banda of the Catholic Archdiocese of Lusaka.

The court heard that more than 400 people were allegedly present at the farm on the first day, and that some people were allegedly given K50 each, sausages and pens, and instructed to vote for Brian Mundubile and Oliver Mwale.

He also told the court that Oliver Mwale and Archbishop Alick Banda were present at the farm in Lumezi South.

During cross-examination, however, Mr. Ngoma submitted that there are no videos or pictures from Dr. Alick Banda’s farm, other than a witness who is yet to give their testimony.

The petitioner was also asked during cross-examination whether he had seen other results indicating that he had won the election, to which he answered no.

Mr. Ngoma’s petition comes after Oliver Mwale was declared the elected Member of Parliament for Lumezi South.

Mr. Ngoma polled 4,946 votes against NRPUP candidate Oliver Mwale, who won with 6,324 votes.-Breezefm
