A 26-year-old female suspect was found hanging in the female cells at Kazungula Police Station.

The deceased identified as Milimo Mpongo of Makalanguzu village in Chief Sekute’s area in Kazungula district was detailed alone in the cells in connection with four theft complaints.

Southern Province Commanding Officer, Moono Namalongo revealed in a statement availed to the media that the deceased was discovered hanging in the female cells using a chitenge material she was wearing, which had been tied to a window burglar bar on August 28, 2026 between 07:00 hours and 08:00 hours.

Mr Namalongo explained that on August 27, 2026 between 14:00 hours and 16:00 hours Ms Mpongo allegedly visited four different Airtel money businesses in Kazungula district and requested transactions ranging from K1, 000 to K3, 400 to be deposited into her mobile money number.

“It is alleged that after the transactions, she would open a small black laptop bag she was carrying and claim that she had forgotten the money at home before disappearing from the respective places,” Mr Namalongo explained.

He said following the complaints, the deceased was apprehended and placed in police custody where the suspected incident of suicide happened.

Mr Namalongo further said officers on duty spoke to her the same day, August 28, 2026 around 07:00 hours, and was later discovered hanging in the female cells using a chitenge material she was wearing.

He added that Police informed the deceased’s relatives about the incident stating that the body was untied in the presence of a relative and taken to Kazungula District Hospital where she was certified dead.

“The body was later taken and deposited at Livingstone Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem examination. The investigations into the matter are ongoing,” said Mr Namalongo.
