Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary, Joe Kalusa has reaffirmed Government’s commitment to human resource development in the health sector.

Mr Kalusa says a well-prepared nursing and midwifery workforce translates into stronger primary healthcare services.

Speaking during the official opening of the Lusaka Provincial Qualifying Round of the Smart 26 Quiz in Lusaka, Mr Kalusa said such contests align with the Ministry of Health’s resolve to producing competent healthcare personnel.

He said competent and confident health workers are in line with national health priorities and contribute to the Eighth National Development Plan (8NDP).

And Mr Kalusa said academic contests promote healthy competition which encourages a culture of excellence.

He urged contestants to take the quiz seriously, describing it as a rehearsal for a career in which sound knowledge can save lives.

Speaking earlier, Provincial Health Director, Simulyamana Choonga said the quality of health professionals trained at higher learning institutions determines the standard of health care communities will receive in future.

Dr Choonga said the Lusaka Province Health Office attaches great importance to human resource development describing it as a cornerstone to quality health service delivery.

He said this in a speech read on his behalf by Provincial Public Health Specialist, Dr Maxine Kayawe.

The contest which has attracted 12 higher learning institutions will see seven schools qualify to the next round to battle it out with other colleges and universities from other parts of the country.
