The Zambia Police Service in Kazungula District in Southern Province is investigating a fire incident in which a storeroom belonging to Platinum Courier Services and two attached makeshift shops at the old Kazungula border market were completely burnt resulting in assorted items destroyed in the inferno.

Southern Province Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo disclosed in a press statement this evening that the incident occurred on August 25, 2026 at around 21:00 hours at the old Kazungula border market.

Mr Namalongo explained that the matter was reported at Kazungula police Station by Moonde Milumbe, aged 31 of Makalanguzu village, Chief Sekute who is a supervisor at Platinum Courier Services.

He said Ms Milumbe reported that the company’s storeroom at the old Kazungula border market had caught fire resulting in the destruction of various goods deposited by clients for deliveries to different parts of the country.

“Brief facts of the matter are that Ms Milumbe closed the storeroom at about 17:30 hours and left everything intact. At about 21:20 hours, she received a telephone call from a concerned member of the public informing her that the storeroom was on fire. She rushed to the scene and found the storeroom engulfed in flames, with various items destroyed,” Mr Namalongo stated.

The Commanding Officer added that two makeshift shops attached to the storeroom belonging to Mr Smart Shifubwa and Ms Mirriam Nyambe were also completely burnt and that Mr Shifubwa aged 42 reported that his shop was completely burnt resulting in the loss of 140 pairs of shoes valued at K56, 000, assorted clothes valued at K10, 000, a deep freezer and a sewing machine whose values are yet to be established.

Mr Namalongo indicated that the deep freezer and a sewing machine were reportedly kept in the shop for safekeeping by neighbors.

He further explained that Ms Nyambe aged 22 reported that her shop was also completely burnt and that property destroyed included two metallic drums valued at K300, a deep freezer valued at K5, 000 and assorted household goods whose value is yet to be established.

“Acting on the reports, police and Fire Brigade officers visited the scene and confirmed that the storeroom and the two attached makeshift shops were extensively damaged by the fire. Investigations are ongoing to ascertain the exact cause of the fire and establish the full extent of the damage,” said Mr Namalongo.
