The fight for Lusaka’s mayoral seat is not over yet, despite the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) having had announced the winner.

The National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) candidate Gabriel Kibombwe has filed a petition disputing the election and declaration of UPND’s Simon Chitambala Mwewa as mayor.

Mwewa was announced by ECZ as winner of the August 13 vote with 200,029 ballots. Kibombwe came in second with 195,041 votes.

The margin between them was 4,988 votes.

With the petition now lodged, the outcome of the tightly contested race will be decided in court.

Kibombwe is asking the judiciary to review the result instead of accepting the Electoral Commission’s declaration.

That means the final decision on who leads Lusaka City Council rests with the courts.
