HALF A BILLION KWACHA IN TOONSE CAMPAIGN FUNDS ALLEGEDLY VANISHES IN 47 DAYS

Long-standing Patriotic Front funders are reportedly unhappy with Toonse Pamodzi Alliance presidential candidate Brian Mundubile over allegations that more than half a billion kwacha in campaign funds has vanished within 47 days.

According to a report by Zambia Eagle reporter George Masonda, businessman Gulam Patel, his son Zayed Patel, and his nephew Irfan Yusuf are said to be concerned by reports that Mr. Mundubile’s campaign team has already exhausted its campaign funds.

The report alleges that the Patel family contributed more than K532,224,650 (approximately US$28,768,900) to support the campaign.

According to the report, the funds were intended to finance the entire campaign, including the hiring of helicopters and other campaign logistics.

However, the report claims that the funders were surprised to learn that the Toonse Pamodzi Alliance had begun appealing to members of the public for financial contributions.

Sources cited by Zambia Eagle further alleged that the businessmen—who are said to have supported the Patriotic Front since the tenure of the late President Edgar Lungu, reportedly in connection with hunting concessions and other business interests—expressed disbelief that the alliance was now seeking donations from ordinary citizens.

“The Patels are utterly surprised by reports that the Alliance is financially constrained and is now appealing to already overstretched Zambians for support,” one source was quoted as saying.

The same sources claimed that the family feels aggrieved, having allegedly provided substantial financial support to Mr. Mundubile and the alliance throughout the campaign period.

Efforts to obtain an official response from Tonse Alliance spokespersons had not yielded a comment by the time of publication.
