Our Editorial Comment

Today, our well-respected Zambian artist, Mark 2, shared how disappointed he was by the failure of other artists to come and support him in Chingola, where he lost to the NRP-UP candidate.

However, we believe Mark 2 is being unfair to some of the artists he expected to support him.

We all know that artists were hired by different political parties during the campaign period. Some were hired by the UPND, while others were hired by Tonse.

For those who may not know, when a political party hires an artist to perform for them, the artist may be expected to perform exclusively for that party, depending on the terms of the contract. Unless the contract allows otherwise, an artist may not be free to perform for an opposing candidate or party.

Both the UPND and Tonse fielded candidates in Nchanga. So, how do you expect an artist who had a contract with the UPND, for example, to come and support an independent candidate instead of the UPND candidate?

The support some artists showed through their Facebook posts should also be acknowledged. They may have wanted to support Mark 2 but could not physically attend because of their existing contractual obligations.

Going against the terms of a contract could potentially constitute a breach of contract and expose an artist to legal consequences.
