The Ministry of Energy says Zambia remains power generation secure despite dwindling water levels in Kariba dam, as the country awaits another water allocation next year from the Zambezi River Authority.

The Zambezi River Authority allocated Zambia and Zimbabwe 30 billion cubic metres of water each for power generation in 2026 but the allocation has been steadily reducing as of August 31.

Ministry of Energy Permanent Secretary for Electricity, Engineer Arnold Simwaba explains that although the allocation is declining, Zambia remains within projected safe levels for power generation during the current period.

Engineer Simwaba states that an immediate crisis is not expected because the water remains stored in the dam and is being managed for electricity generation but however said the impending El Niño weather phenomenon has raised uncertainty over the country’s hydropower outlook.

He explained that inadequate rainfall in the coming rainy season could affect inflows into the dam and impact hydro-electricity generation, which remains Zambia’s major source of power.

Engineer Simwaba has told Phoenix News that government is accelerating the diversification of Zambia’s energy mix through investments in alternative sources, particularly solar and coal, to cushion the country against possible reductions in hydropower generation.
