THREE chiefdoms in Mpongwe District have received two bicycles each to enhance mobility in the fight against child marriages.
The six bicycles are expected to help subjects and community structures in the three chiefdoms for easy movement and quick response to cases of child marriage and other child protection concerns.
Mpongwe District Commissioner Mwambashi Mwitwa who was accompanied by Gender Division Director, Nchimunya Nkombo handed over the bicycles to Lesa, Malembeka and Ndubeni Chiefdoms.
Mr Mwitwa said after the handover of the bicycles, that the initiative is aimed at strengthening community-based surveillance and ensuring early marriages are reported and stopped.
“The bicycles will help our people in Ndubeni, Malembeka and Lesa Chiefdoms with mobility to tackle child marriages. We want every case to be reported and acted upon quickly,” Mr Mwitwa said.
Meanwhile, Gender Division Director, Ms Nkombo stated that more stringent measures are being put in place to protect the girl child.
