First Quantum Minerals (FQM) has significantly increased its commitment to community investment, social outreach, and communication, registering a remarkable 77% surge in spending in 2025 compared to the previous year.
According to the company’s recently released Tax Transparency & Contributions Report, FQM, operator of two major mines in Zambia, including Kansanshi Mining PLC, raised its community investment to over $23 million in 2025, up from $13 million in 2024, signaling a positive trend for local development.
In an interview with the Zambian Business Times (ZBT), Remmy Kalepa, the recent past Mayor of Solwezi, commended FQM’s enhanced investment and ongoing collaboration with local authorities and the government.
“Having worked closely with FQM for five years in Solwezi district, I can confirm that tangible progress is being made through joint efforts with both the government and local authorities,” Kalepa said. “This cooperation ensures that communities benefit from the presence of such a significant investment in their district.”
Kalepa highlighted the proactive engagement between the mines and local stakeholders, encouraging the company to continue prioritizing projects aligned with community needs. “In Solwezi, road infrastructure has been a persistent concern. Residents often question why a town hosting such major investments continues to face road challenges.”
“The local authority and municipal council funded 50% of a recent 4.8 to 5 km dual carriageway project, with the mines matching this contribution. Such collaborations are promising foundations, but more needs to be done, especially in addressing township road deficits that were neglected by previous administrations,” he added.
Beyond infrastructure, Kalepa added that FQM’s corporate social responsibility programs have included building school classroom blocks, refurbishing community libraries, supporting water projects in rural areas, and providing inputs to local farmers. Kalepa emphasized the positive impact of these initiatives but called for continued and increased efforts. “We appreciate the investment, but there is an ongoing need for FQM to continue responding to community concerns.” he said.
