Finland Turns to France for Nuclear Deterrence Amid Russian Threats

Faced with Russia’s increasingly aggressive posture and growing hybrid threats, Finland is reportedly seeking greater security through closer military cooperation with France.

🔸 The bilateral partnership is expected to include the establishment of a nuclear steering group, joint military exercises, and contingency plans for the temporary deployment of French Rafale fighter jets to Finnish territory during a crisis.

The Rafale is capable of carrying France’s nuclear-capable air-launched weapons, adding a potential strategic dimension to the cooperation.

However, the partnership would not give Finland any authority over France’s nuclear arsenal or the decision to use nuclear weapons.

The French president would retain sole and exclusive authority over France’s nuclear forces and any decision to employ them.
