The Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) in Nalolo District has successfully validated three candidates nominated as Councillors under the Mixed Member Proportional Representation (MMPR) system.

The United Party for National Development (UPND) is the only political party that qualified to nominate Councillors for the reserved seats in Nalolo District.

The three nominated Councillors are Naluba Muyoyeta representing Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), Kawengo Butete representing the Youth, and Imbwela Inonge representing Women.

The exercise involved physical verification of identities and validation of qualifications at Nalolo Town Council.

Nalolo District Electoral Officer, Falantino Mweemba, has congratulated the three candidates on their successful nomination.

Mr Mweemba said the three nominated Councillors will soon be sworn in to enable them to actively participate in Council deliberations and promote inclusive civic representation in the district.

“Don’t feel like you have less power than the others, you have equal power. So, please feel free when that time comes to be in the House. You should be able to debate, to vote and do everything that any other Councillor should do,” he said.

Meanwhile, Nalolo District UPND Secretary, Mawano Lishandu, thanked the ECZ for the smooth implementation of the nomination and validation process, despite the Mixed Member Proportional Representation system being implemented for the first time in Zambia’s history.

Mr Lishandu urged the nominated Councillors to put the interests of the people first, stressing that many people qualified for consideration but only three were selected for the reserved seats.

He said the opportunity should therefore be met with hard work, commitment and effective representation of the people.
