Speaker of the National Assembly, Nelly Mutti has sworn-in all the 40 non-constituency-based Members of Parliament (MPs) under the Mixed Member Proportional Representation (PR) system.

The 40 comprise 20 women, 15 youths and five persons with disability.

Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony at the National Assembly Chamber in Lusaka today, Ms Mutti congratulated the parliamentarians and welcomed them to the 14th National Assembly, scheduled to commence on October 2, 2026 with the election of the Speaker and Presiding Officers.

Among those sworn-in are former Lusaka Deputy Mayor Ketty Nanyangwe, Disability Rights Activist Lazarous Hakalebula, UPND Alliance partner Judith Kabemba, former Kafue Member of Parliament Mirriam Chonya and UPND Deputy Secretary General Getrude Imenda.

Others are UPND National Management Committee member Francis Kope, who represents persons with disability, and former University of Zambia Students’ Union (UNZASU) Vice-president Jemaimah Mwaba.

Meanwhile, newly sworn-in Member of Parliament, Judith Kabemba said she intends to move a motion in Parliament aimed at criminalising hate speech.

Ms Kabemba told the media in an interview that the proposed motion will seek to address hate speech in the country.

She has also thanked President Hakainde Hichilema for what she described as visionary leadership, particularly in supporting young people.
