Residents of Chitambo District in Central Province have expressed optimism following President Hakainde Hichilema’s pledge to accelerate infrastructure development and improve livelihoods through investments in healthcare, mining, electricity and road infrastructure.

Margaret Bule of Mukando area told the media in an interview that President Hichilema’s pledge to construct a district hospital with mortuary services would significantly improve access to healthcare, as residents are currently forced to travel long distances to access mortuary services.

Ms Bule said the proposed hospital would ease the burden on families during bereavement while bringing essential healthcare services closer to the people.

She further welcomed the proposed construction of a bridge across Luombwa Stream, saying the project would improve connectivity between communities, particularly during the rainy season when the stream becomes flooded and impassable.

“The absence of a bridge disrupts access to essential services, as learners struggle to get to school, patients encounter difficulties accessing health facilities and farmers face challenges transporting their produce to markets, especially during the rainy season when the stream becomes impassable,” Ms Bule said.

Meanwhile, Daliso Banda of Mumba area observed that President Hichilema’s pledge to provide equipment to registered gold mining cooperatives would promote safer, more productive and formalised small-scale mining activities in the district.

Mr Banda called on local miners to form registered cooperatives so that they could benefit from government support and promote safer and more organised mining operations.

He said access to appropriate mining equipment would enhance productivity, improve household incomes and contribute to the growth of the local economy

President Hakainde Hichilema made the pledges when he recently addressed the public at Mpelembe Secondary School Grounds, where he appealed to the people of Chitambo to vote for him and United Party for National Development (UPND) aspiring parliamentary and local government candidates in the forthcoming general election.
