The Food Reserve Agency (FRA) is set to open three additional satellite depots in Mungwi District in Northern Province this week.

This is in response to the surge in maize deliveries by farmers in the 2026 maize marketing season in the district.

Food Reserve Agency Northern Province Regional Marketing Coordinator, Timothy Chanda who disclosed the matter to ZANIS today said the additional depots will help increase the number of buying points from 38 to 41 in the district.

Mr Chanda noted that doing so is likely to hasten the buying process as well as help the agency cope with the growing volume of maize being delivered by farmers.

 He said the expansion was necessary to ensure farmers deliver their produce efficiently without unnecessary delays.

“Mungwi District currently has 38 satellite depots, but looking at the number of farmers delivering their maize produce, we have been prompted to open three more depots this week we hope that by opening three more depots farmers can quicken their supply of maize to the Agency,” Mr Chanda said.

Mr Chanda disclosed that the additional satellite depots will be established in Tukuta and Misamfu areas, considering the large number of farmers in the area.

He has described the ongoing maize marketing season as progressive, adding that processing of payments for farmers is being done on a daily basis.

He has since urged farmers to adhere to schedules provided for by the Agency to ensure smooth and orderly operations at the depots.

Mr Chanda revealed that Mungwi district is among the major maize producing districts in Northern Province hence the need to increase buying points.

” Mungwi is one of the high maize producing district in the province, and the opening of the three additional satellites is targeted at high productivity areas in order to ease congestion and bring maize collection points closer to farmers, particularly those in far flung and high production areas,” he said.

The Food Reserve Agency is currently running the maize market, with huge stacks of maize being observed in many satellite depots across the district.
