Police have recorded warn and caution statements from National Reconciliation Party for Unity and Prosperity (NRPUP) presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and his running mate Makebi Zulu in connection with an alleged offence of treason.

Zambia Police Public Relations Officer Godfrey Chilabi said the two opposition leaders were interviewed by law enforcement officers today and are currently being held in police custody.

In a statement, Chilabi said investigations into the matter are ongoing and that police will provide further information as inquiries progress.

The development follows the questioning of Mundubile and Zulu by law enforcement officers this afternoon as investigations into alleged activities linked to national security continue.

The recording of warn and caution statements means the two opposition figures have formally been interviewed in relation to the allegations. However, the statements and ongoing investigations do not in themselves establish guilt, and any criminal case would have to be determined through the legal process.

The development comes days after the August 13, 2026 General Elections, in which Mundubile contested the presidency on the NRPUP ticket, with Zulu serving as his running mate.

Police have not disclosed detailed information regarding the specific allegations forming the basis of the treason investigations.
