The Department of Fisheries, Livestock and Veterinary Services vaccinated 961 cattle against Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) in Chilanga during the second quarter of 2026.

Chilanga District Fisheries and Livestock Coordinator, Alex Mupongo explained that LSD, is a highly contagious viral infection spread by biting insects such as mosquitoes, flies and ticks, stating that central government is yet to procure additional vaccines to vaccinate more cattle.

During the same quarter, 101 dogs were vaccinated against rabies, against the set target of 3,750.

Dr Mupongo attributed this to poor community response.

In an interview with the  media, Dr Mupongo noted that under the Foot and Mouth Disease surveillance programme, 3,048 samples were collected and tested, with 47 animals testing positive and 3,001 tested negative.

Dr Mupongo stated that surveillance on the Contagious Bovine Pleura-Pneumonia (CBPP) in the district from the samples collected indicated that all 3,048 samples came out negative.

In fish production, the district recorded a production of 2,150,000 fingerlings and 27,826 kilogrammes of fish, an outcome Dr Mupongo credited to improved record keeping by fish farmers.
